Memorial Day Picnic

A great American tradition on Memorial Day is packing a picnic lunch to watch a local town parade.   We thought our Blueberry Nutmeg Cake would be a perfect addition to anyone's Memorial Day celebration.  For this picnic we made Grilled Chicken Pesto sandwiches and a few slices of the cake. For a few festive touches we used blue napkins tied with red and white ribbon,  blue paper straws, and this great beach cooler we bought at Bloomstrings when we were in Long Island.

Have a great weekend!

Blueberry Nutmeg Cake

On Monday, we attended a book signing for the new cookbook by Cheryl Sternman Rule, Ripe, at Les Zygomates in Boston.  This beautiful book focuses on recipes made with fresh fruits and vegetables, and is separated into chapters by colors.  When browsing through the pages of this book, we were drawn to a recipe for a Blueberry Nutmeg Cake.  We were looking for a dessert for our Memorial Day picnic and this cake was perfect!  We used fresh blueberries and lots of nutmeg which was a new flavor profile that we loved.

Popcorn Cupcake

While perusing the many blogs we love to visit, we found this delicious Popcorn Cake on Cookies & Cups and we just had to try to make it ourselves.  This time we decided to go miniature and why not make a small "Cupcake" version.

1 Bag of Butter Popcorn
1 Cup of M&M's
1 Cup of Pretzel Sticks (broken)
1/2 Stick of Butter
4 Cups of Mini Marshmallows

  • Mix the popcorn, M&M's, and pretzels in a large bowl. (Make sure you take out all of the kernels that didn't pop.)
  • In a medium sauce pan melt the butter and then add the marshmallows.  Allow the mixture to cool for a few minutes.
  • Add the marshmallow to the popcorn and mix.
  • Grease the small bundt pans and add the mixture.
  • Let cool for at least an hour
Enjoy!

Summer Sangria

One of our favorite ways to spend a warm, Saturday evening is by sipping on a glass of this Summer Sangria.  It's dark and fruity and the perfect addition to a Happy Hour or Tapas Night.  Stay tuned for some yummy recipes from our recent Tapas Night with our friends.

Kerry's Kentucky Derby

We jumped at the chance to do a Kentucky Derby party and this year it just happened to land on our friend Kerry's Birthday.  We recreated the scene at Churchill Downs by making a scene of festive hats watching the horses race to the finish line.  The hats are made from rice krispie treats that were dipped in chocolate and then decorated with chocolate ribbons, flowers, and polka dots.  The chocolate horse lollipops were made from filling molds with milk and white chocolate.  For the winner's circle we made a chocolate cake topped with butercream frosting and decorated with fondant roses and gold candles.

For the guests we thought, "what would be a Kentucky Derby without hats!"  We purchased inexpensive hats and decorated them with feathers, flowers, and ribbon.  Once everyone was dressed up with their hats, they were on their way to get a mint julep.  These traditional julep cups were the perfect way to bring the whole party together.

Happy Birthday Kerry! And congrats to the winning horse!

Early Mornings & Midnight Snacks

Last week we were asked to make a basket for a couple who just had a baby boy!  We were thrilled to be asked to make this basket and quickly got to thinking what we could do.  Based on a few suggestions from our client, we made a basket we like to call our Early Mornings & Midnight Snacks Basket.  We took a burlap lined basket, and filled it with a bag of Breakfast Blend Coffee, and two monogrammed mugs (one for Mom and one for Dad).  In addition to this, we also made some incredibly chocolatey brownies and chocolate chip cookies which were both made with coffee for an extra jolt of caffeine new parents need.  We sure hope they enjoyed this!
